Secondary School

Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary — JSS 1 through to SS 3, on the Nigerian national curriculum.

The secondary years.

Sure Edge Montessori Secondary School runs the full secondary course — Junior Secondary from JSS 1 to JSS 3, and Senior Secondary from SS 1 to SS 3. It follows the Nigerian national curriculum, and keeps classes small enough that a teacher knows every student's work.

The move from primary to secondary is where many able children quietly come unstuck. Subjects multiply, teachers change by period, and a student who is struggling can go unnoticed for a term. We organise against that. Subject teachers share what they see, form teachers hold the whole picture of a student, and parents hear from us before a problem has become a habit.

The motto of the Secondary School is Stand, Build and Lead. It describes what we are trying to produce: young people who know what they believe, who can make something useful of their work and their character, and who take responsibility before anyone asks them to.

The two stages

Junior Secondary, then Senior Secondary.

Six years in two halves. The first keeps every door open. The second lets a student go through the one that suits them.

JSS 1 – JSS 3 · From 11 years

Junior Secondary

A broad foundation across the national curriculum, completing the basic education cycle. Students carry every core subject, so that no door is closed before they are old enough to choose. The stage concludes with the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

SS 1 – SS 3 · From 14 years

Senior Secondary

Students specialise, carrying the compulsory core subjects alongside the stream that suits their strengths and their intended course of study. The stage prepares them for the senior school certificate examinations and for university entrance.

How the Secondary School works

What we focus on.

Small classes

We keep classes small on purpose. A teacher who knows every student catches a problem in the week it appears, rather than at the end of term.

Responsibility given early

Prefect roles, house competition and club leadership put students in charge of something real, where the consequences of doing it badly are their own.

Prepared for the life ahead

Junior Secondary works towards the Basic Education Certificate Examination; Senior Secondary towards the senior school certificate examinations and university entrance.

The Secondary School motto

“Stand, Build and Lead.”

Stand

To know what you believe, and to hold it when it is inconvenient.

Build

To make something useful — of your work, your character, and the place you find yourself in.

Lead

To take responsibility before you are asked to, starting with yourself.

Coming up from Basic 5

For our own pupils, nothing is lost in the move.

A child who has come through our Early Years & Primary School arrives in secondary already known: their reading, their confidence, the subjects that come easily and the ones that do not. No one spends a term working out what they are capable of.

Students joining us from other schools sit the same entrance assessment, and are placed with the same care.
